The competition is now in its sixth year and covers more than 200 streets in Ashton, Ashton Vale, Bedminster and Southville.
The competition is coordinated by Southville Community Development Association (SCDA) and is sponsored by Highcroft Veterinary Practice, O2 It’s Your Community Fund and the Riverside Garden Centre.
This year the competition will be promoting wildlife friendly gardening.
There are two stages to the competition.
Stage 1
The competition is split into 54 rounds. Between Monday 9 and Sunday 22 June volunteer judges will visit each round and award ‘Good Garden Award’ in recognition of those gardens that make a positive contribution to the appearance of the street. The judges will use the competition rules and criteria to help them during the first round.
Each first round judge is asked to nominate one garden from their round to go onto a shortlist for the second round. The first round judges will score the gardens they nominate to the second round. As the competition area is now quite large it has been divided into three geographical areas:
- Ashton and Ashton Vale
- Bedminster
- Southville
Judges meet in early June to shortlist the eight gardens in each area that will go through to second round.
Stage 2
Between the Friday 27 June and Friday 25 July, pictures of the shortlisted gardens for each area will be displayed at the Riverside Garden Centre, the Southville Centre and on the website. The public can vote online or at the Riverside to choose the garden they want to win.
The winners will be announced on Sunday 3 August, 3pm at the Riverside Garden Centre. Please come along and find out who the winners are.
Best Street Award
The judges will also be looking for streets to nominate for the Best Street Award. Using set criteria judges will look for streets where a number of gardens make a combined positive contribution to the area.
Best Business Award
The judges will also be looking for local business to nominate for the Best Business Award. Using set criteria, judges will look for any business that makes a positive contribution to the area.
School Wildlife Garden Competition
The six primary schools in the front garden competition area have been invited to join in a competition to see which school has the best wildlife area in their school ground. Each school has been asked to say what they are doing to promote wildlife at their school. Members of the Sustainable Southville Project will decide the winning school.
